- W249704031 abstract "What impressions does the visiting worshiper carry away from a parish Sunday eutharist? This review of four neighborhood parishes in a city of neighborhoods, City, offers impressions of the physical setting, the visual and artistic aspects of buildings designed to house congregations engaged in eucharistic worship, and the mystical aura of liturgy and music. reader also may learn something of how parishioners respond to visitors and of the weekday ministry of the congregations in their neighborhoods. I All Sorts and Conditions of People: Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy on the Fourth Sunday of Easter On the pleasant cross-town West 84th Street, an angular, rather fortress-looking concrete building stands out among the nineteenth-century brownstones near Central Park. As its name suggests, the Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy is a merger of two parishes that occurred in 1922. present structure replaced St. Matthew's former building, which was destroyed by fire in 1965. church entrance to one side of the building leads down a long windowless corridor or ambulatory to the liturgical west end of the nave. altar area is at the street end of the building. Stations of the cross line the ambulatory. seating layout is unusual, in that the nave is bisected crosswise rather than lengthwise and a low balcony is on the epistle side. Choir stalls are behind and somewhat higher than the freestanding altar. A mosaic tile cross is suspended above the altar. Tall clear windows on the left, or gospel side of the nave, provide a view toward the parish hall complex which is at a right angle to the church. With its separate entrance, the parish house is the center for an extensive social and outreach ministry in this multi-cultural, multi-ethnic area of Manhattan. This ministry is accomplished through the agencies of its Neighborhood Center, which operates not only seven programs but also a Housing Corporation under separate management. There are sixteen functioning parish groups. Parish literature lists three celebrations of the eucharist on Sundays: at 8:00 A.M., at 9:30 A.M. in Spanish, and at 11:00 A.M. under the title Solemn Mass. eucharist and offices are offered on all weekdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in Spanish. While the choir of about a dozen adults rehearses prior to the 11:00 A.M. celebration, the congregation, in a mix of dress from informal to New York summer, enters casually. ethnic mix is varied. Small in numbers and largely female, with a number of children, the congregation scatters itself through the different seating areas. liturgy begins with vested choir procession led by thurifer, crucifier, and torches, singing At the Lamb's High Feast. clergy party consists of sub-deacon, deacon and priest vested in white chasuble for the Easter season. Rite II eucharist follows the Prayer Book pattern, with sung gloria, Mathias setting, and sung collect. After the reading of the Old Testament lesson, a period of silence is observed, the psalm then is said, and silence follows the epistle. gradual hymn, Walk By Faith, is followed by sung alleluias for the gospel, which is read from the head of the nave. This is Good Shepherd Sunday, and the sermon of about twelve minutes, delivered by the celebrant from the pulpit, focuses on discerning the Shepherd. A period of silence follows. creed is said, followed by parish-designed prayers of the people and choral setting to the peace. After the choir offertory anthem, Give us the Wings of Faith, all sing Jesus Lives. sursum corda and sanctus are sung, and the great thanksgiving prayer B is used with sung acclamation. our Father, fraction anthem and Agnus Del (Willan setting) are sung. During the choir anthem, The Day Draws on with Golden Light, the congregation receives communion at the altar rail. All then recite the first post-communion prayer. Easter blessing and dismissal follow, and Lift High the Cross is the concluding hymn. …" @default.
