These au thors have for mu lated the fol low ing ques tions, rel e vant for chro mato graphic – mass spec tro met ric procedures: – How can an a lyt i cal prop er ties be com pared (e.g. how to com pare mass spec tra)? – What should be con sid ered an “ad e quate” match? – Is there a dif fer ence be tween con fir ma tion and iden ti fi ca tion? – What are the re quire ments for suit able da ta bases? – What are the cri te ria for re ject ing sub stances? – What is the prob a bil ity of cor rect ness of iden ti fi ca tion? De Zeeuw and Franke dis tin guished three types of iden ti fi ca tion: Struc ture elu ci da tion through iden ti fi ca tion of a pure com pound by pow er ful spec tro met ric meth ods, con fir ma tion as a re sult of suc cess ful com par i son of the prop er ties of the ex pected sub stance with a ref er ence sub stance, and rec og ni tion as a re sult of pos i tive match ing of the prop er ties of the un known sub stance with a ref er ence da ta base.
