- W2497391520 abstract "Typical dopamine (DA) receptor agonists are known to reduce the metabolism and synthesis of dopamine (DA) (Carlsson, 1975) as well as the firing activity of DA-neurons (Aghajanian and Bunney, 1977) and to influence motor activity in a biphasic inhibitory-stimulatory man ner (Di Chiara et al., 1976; Strombom, 1976). According to current belief the inhibitory effects of DA-agonists on motor activity are related to stimulation of DA-receptors located on the DA-neuron itself and inhibiting neurotransmitter release and neuronal activity (DA-autoreceptors). However, in spite of the large number of studies performed on this subject, none of them has estimated the effect of DA-agonists on the release and metabolism of DA in freely moving animals. Here we report the effect of various DA-receptor agonists provided with different specificity and intrinsic activity for different DA-receptor subtypes on the release of DA, studied by brain dialysis, and on motor activity in behaving rats (Imperato and Di Chiara, 1984, 1985, 1986)." @default.
