- W2497710813 abstract "In a 1998 interview, discussing the effects of modernization on the area around her home in Minamata, Michiko Ishimure claimed, “Destruction of language came first; this, I believe, lies at the core of modernization” (“Destruction” 128). Ishimure went on to describe at length the process through which the rich life steeped in connections to community and nature that she had known as a child unraveled in tandem with the rapid changes that occurred in the local language; in particular with the changes that accompanied the men who returned from World War II. In telling her story of the interrelated breakdowns of language, community, and environment, Ishimure touched on the central themes of her life’s work as a writer and activist. Her story represents part of the larger history of the process of modernization that has played itself out in various scenarios in Japan, as well as in many other parts of the world. It is a story of the loss of language diversity and of the power of language to shape, rationalize, and modernize societies; often leaving not only traditional languages, but also local communities and nature fractured and impoverished." @default.
