Initially, it discusses the incorporation of polymers as simple coatings for biosensors. The coatings are typically used: (1) to improve selectivity and (2) to improve the biocompatibility of biosensors. Similar coatings that are used as anchors for biomolecules in various techniques are discussed in the chapter. The chapter also explains polymers that have a more active role. It also describes the conducting polymers, their structures and their use in biosensors. It highlights the redox-active polymers and their use to “wire” the biological moieties to electrodes. It provides an overview of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and their potential to replace biological molecules as active components within biosensors. The vast majority of the biosensors is required to deal with the physiological samples or potentially to be implanted as functional components within the in vivo devices. Such sensors, unless they are designed for single use only, must show biocompatibility and stability over extended periods of time." @default.
