- W2497902875 abstract "Any discussion of the boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics usually begins with the US boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics, the result of a general belief among Western historians that the Soviet boycott was nothing more than retaliation for the 1980 American boycott. Indeed, it would be foolish on the part of anyone to dismiss the possibility that elements in the Supreme Soviet wanted a vengeance-oriented response to the US boycott of the Moscow Olympics. However, it would be equally (perhaps even more so) foolish to assume that there was no other explanation but tit-for-tat retribution. It is this latter assumption of Western historians and political scientists that this book seeks to challenge. By either ignoring outright or only cursorily considering the bidding process, researchers are skipping half the story. The events of the boycott of 1984 start in 1970, ten years before most other studies begin research. Tensions over Moscow and Los Angeles’s selections for the Olympics were a decade old when Soviet military personnel crossed into Afghanistan." @default.
