- W2498446518 abstract "From what has been said so far it is clear that Kant rejected the idea that God has made the moral law and has imposed it on men with the threat of punishment if they do not obey it. If men obeyed the moral law because of this they would be acting prudentially, in order to avoid the pains of Hell and to obtain the pleasures of Heaven. Furthermore, according to Kant’s Principle of Autonomy, in obeying the moral law an individual obeys a law which he recognises as his. Morality, as Kant understands it, requires the individual who is subject to it to be citizen and sovereign as well as subject. The moral law links rational beings together in a community that transcends nature because the Idea of it can be the motive which freely controls the natural desires of each member. This view could be described as non-theological, in that according to it morality can be analysed and, apparently, pursued, without any necessary reference to divine commands. It could also be described as anti-theological, in that it is incompatible with the sort of utilitarian or prudential theology that was widespread in the eighteenth century, according to which a man with a prudent regard for his own long-term interests would do well to obey God’s orders." @default.
