- W2498585561 abstract "This chapter highlights the political background in the making of Eastern Europe. The story of Eastern Europe since the war may be seen as the story of three men; Stalin who built up Soviet control, Tito who challenged it, and Khrushchev who presided over its disintegration. The various countries of Eastern Europe, thus, share three characteristics: they all have communist governments that grew out of the dislocation of war; all have at some time been in a special relationship with the Soviet Union; and in recent times, they have been reinterpreting communist policy in ways that seem more suited to their own circumstances. Post-war Communism, Sovietization, and national deviation have made their mark on education as on other aspects of life. The communist character of the regimes has led them to reconstruct education in accordance with the principles of Marxism, to change the social role of education, to reinterpret its aims and functions, and to change the content and administration and structure of education with a thoroughness that other kinds of regimes are seldom able to muster, because of lack of power or motive or because of single-mindedness. In short, communist regimes have felt obliged to make radical changes in society and have always seen education as one of the ways of achieving this. Further, the fact of Soviet tutelage led them to rely heavily on Russian models, even if these had little to do with communist theory as such. Finally, the irregular move toward national communism has led them to ring further changes on their systems in accordance with their own national individuality; this, while not necessarily creating liberalization, is likely at least to create an atmosphere of greater flexibility." @default.
