The surface irrigation network in Chile depends on precipitation and, in general, the irrigation season is strongly affected by snow storage at the high Andes Cordillera. Agriculture in central valleys is mainly under irrigation. Chilean agriculture has been characterized by continuous rearrangement along recent decades during which annual crops have declining, changing for fruit tree plantations. Drought during the growing seasons 1998–1999 and 2007–2008 was harsher in Chile. The characteristics of these events are exposed and discussed using national statistics as well as two qualitative surveys carried out in the irrigated valleys of Curicó province during this time. This province is located in the Maule region, a more agricultural of the country. Tactical measures by farmers and government during droughts are shown while current and future strategies are discussed. Water management in future should apply more specific sustainability indicators, such as water footprint. The main needs are increase in dam capacity and improvement of efficiency of water conduction to field application. As evidenced, drought is a relative concept and usually the agricultural sector is more affected when water demand exceeds availability. Notably, in the cases of droughts in 1998–1999 and 2007–2008, the latter was harder than the former despite the fact that precipitation was higher due to the strong increase in fruit tree plantations." @default.
