- W2498760945 abstract "If Virginia Woolf’s novels inhabit a relentlessly high culture environment, her literary criticism and non-fictional writings belong to a less rarified stratosphere, as her contemporaries recognised (sometimes to her annoyance). Yet her descent into a populist mode was in those writings a deliberate political act, in which she set herself to undermine the distinctions between pure thought and physical experience as thoroughly as her purchase of the Hogarth Press had undermined the notion that a book could exist independent of the material object which the reader holds in her hands. The body, always intrusive in Virginia Woolf’s own life, was for her the route back into an ideal of wholeness which would allow women to re-enter a culture colonised by male authors after the introduction of print in the fifteenth century. If she creates her own mythology around this idea, she nevertheless found in some Renaissance writers attitudes to the body which spoke to the world she wanted to recreate in defiance of Victorian traditions of separatist high culture. The physicality of the body, and the material nature of the book, are for her the partners of reading and writing, which begin as physical acts.KeywordsFree SpeechHigh CulturePrinting PressCommon HistoryWoman WriterThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
