- W2498852216 abstract "This chapter discusses the neuropsychology of perceptual functions. Neurophysiological evidence suggests specialized pathways for different perceptual functions, especially within the visual system. There is some location in the brain where the percept is finally formed from all of its scattered parts. The act of perception may consist rather of the totality of activity in the brain. If this is so, the percept does not need to be reassembled; rather, different brain areas simply provide different information about the perceived world. The binding problem may be solved not by spatial reassembly but by a temporal code, which is a synchronization of oscillatory activity that signals temporary conjunctions between attributes that make up a perceived object. There are descending and ascending pathways in the perceptual systems that probably serve to filter and modify forward processing. It is suggested that the descending pathways may play the more prominent role. It is argued that the sequence of events in the perceptual act is somewhat the reverse of what is generally assumed." @default.
