- W2498958628 abstract "Much ink and angst have been spent throughout the centuries trying to discern the exact relationship between medieval thought and the origins of experimental science. The topic has been contentious in large measure because of the highly religious nature of medieval thought. Many Enlightenment historians who saw religion and science as fundamentally incompatible projected their perception of hostility between the two onto medieval society. They argued that modern science came into its own only after religion was relegated to a separate, isolated sphere of activity by early modern society, thereby freeing intellectuals to have a scientific revolution in the seventeenth century. According to Voltaire and Condorcet religion was an obstacle to all free inquiry and was responsible for the “general decay and degeneracy” and, specifically, “for the complete decadence of philosophy and the sciences” which marked the intellectual life of the Middle Ages.1 Jacob Burckhardt accepted the Enlightenment judgment and perhaps drew a deeper line between medieval religion and modern science by his insistence that “in the Middle Ages both sides of human consciousness—that which turned within and that which turned without—lay as though dreaming or half awake beneath a common veil,” a veil which “was woven of faith.”2 Some of Buckhardt’s students were even more extreme, one claiming that the medieval church “had drawn a thick veil” between “the mind of man and the outer world,” leaving it for the Renaissance scholars to liberate “reason from a dungeon.”3" @default.
