In order to understand the interrelation between microstructure and toughness in modern high-strength steels, the main attention has been paid to the role of martensite-austenite particles as a site of crack initiation in granular bainite. An effort was undertaken here to investigate the microstructural factors affecting the propagation of the cleavage fracture. Methods. Charpy-V impact testing and tensile testing were carried out at low temperatures using specimens with a microstructure of simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone in quenched and tempered, high-strength low-alloyed steels. Electron microscopy was employed to examine the interaction between a cleavage crack and the microstructural constituents on the fracture profile. Results and conclusions. Kinks of 7 types were detected on the fracture profile. They were further classified into 3 categories by their effects on toughness. Beneficial, harmful and non-effective kinks resulted from high-angle interfaces, mariensite-austenite constituents and the intersection of 2 individual straight microcracks, respectively. All kinks increased roughness, but the beneficial kinks favored, the harmful deteriorated, and the non-effective did not affect toughness.
