- W2499463538 abstract "Discussions of compliance often take for granted that it is something desirable. But we do not need to spend much time consuming prison film and literature to sense a deep ambivalence about rule-abidance and rule-breaking, and an intuitive concern that compliance within prison might bear little relationship to psychological health or future prospects. Some of our most celebrated cinematic heroes — for example, McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption — are men who have railed against authority in the name of justice, or have escaped institutions of confinement either in spirit or in person. Just as tellingly, in both films, we see the perils of total compliance, in the form of characters whose absolute submission to the demands and rituals of institutional life makes them unable to function outside the boundaries of their confinement (or, at least, fearful of this possibility). As McNeill and Robinson suggest (above), there is no straightforward relationship between short-term institutional compliance — which I will argue, in the prison, is often equated with ‘obedience’ — and longer-term legal compliance (or ’desistance’), which can at best be a subject of informed conjecture during the period of imprisonment." @default.
