Three German-language questionnaires for the assessment of personality structure were cross-validated in this study. Methods: The Borderline Personality Inventory (BPI), the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO), and the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis Structure Questionnaire (OPD-SF) were completed by 223 patients with psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders. Global scores and subscale scores were correlated with each other. Results: The global scores of these questionnaires correlated highly (r > 0.80). Most of the subscales also showed high correlations. One subscale of each questionnaire showed lower correlations. This was most prominent in the “Reality Testing” subscale of the BPI and the “Moral Values” subscale of the IPO.Conclusion: Cross-validation revealed good correlations of the three instruments, confirming the robustness of the concept of personality structure. Single subscales, aiming at reality testing and moral values, depict in part symptomatology and, thus, might be less suited for diagnosing personality structure. The questionnaires can be recommended for diagnostic screening in both clinical practice and for research purposes.
