- W2499694032 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of the rhythms in the infant and the aged. A consideration of circadian rhythms in infants and aged subjects is useful not only for the sake of completeness but also because it might be possible to gain insight into the mechanisms by which rhythms operate and interact if they are studied during times of development and change. Special problems are associated with experimentation upon such groups. It is not possible to gain informed consent from an infant and procedures such as urine collection become far more difficult than in the adult. Frequent plasma sampling from infants is not possible, and there are ethical considerations that limit the kind of experiment that would be scientifically useful and permissible upon a volunteer adult. As a result, there are even less data from the infant than the adult, and any statements made must be regarded with more caution. The only exception to this is the readily available supply of prepuces upon which mitotic counts may be made. In the case of the aged too, it is important that unnecessary trauma be avoided in a subject who is becoming frail. Studies upon geriatric subjects can be made more difficult by their failing mental powers or their reluctance to cooperate. Some data from infants and the aged have been obtained, and an outline of these and some of their implications is given in this chapter. One of the most distressing results of the changes of rhythms associated with old age is interrupted sleep caused by the frequent need to urinate. The chapter highlights some possible causes of the changed rhythms in the aged." @default.
