- W2499694975 abstract "In 1993, Chris Shilling sagely pointed out that the body had ‘historically been something of an “absent presence”’ (p. 15) in the social sciences. Since that time, there has been ‘a veritable explosion of interest’ (Williams & Bendelow, 1998, p. 1) in the body and embodiment within socio-cultural theorising and research. However, the subjective experience of having and being in an ageing and aged body has not been as extensively examined (Arber & Ginn, 1991; Calasanti & Slevin, 2001; Faircloth, 2003; Hurd Clarke, 2010; Tulle, 2008; Twigg, 2004). Additionally, there has been limited elucidation of the process and complex nature of conducting research on older adults’ perceptions and experiences of their ageing bodies. In this chapter, I examine the reasons for the continued disinterest in and ambivalence towards the aged body and refer to key examples of research that have positioned the older body as an essential focal point in gerontology and the sociology of ageing. I will also discuss the challenges of investigating the doing of gender and age (West & Zimmerman, 1987) in and through the body, drawing on my own experiences of conducting research with men and women about their bodies and embodied experiences in later life.KeywordsBody ImageInternalise AgeismEveryday ExperienceSensitive TopicBody EsteemThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
