- W2499775917 abstract "The dominance of Common Sense attitudes towards the imagination placed the nationalist author in a difficult position. The novelist of domestic sentiment could claim to have observed at first hand the experiences represented in his or her fictions, but the pioneering experiences which formed America’s unique identity could rarely be offered as the personal experience of the writer. More usually they had to be offered as products of the imagination, and the author’s works were then considered improbable and scarcely worth serious attention. The publishing history of Melville’s Typee illustrates the point: at first refused publication because it was thought fictitious and so without real value, its later acceptance as an autobiographical account amounted to a denial of Melville’s authorial responsibility for its construction.1 Melville’s subsequent attempts to escape being reduced to ‘the man who lived with the cannibals’ can be seen as a struggle against the literalism of readers who could only see books as either factual and true or imaginative and false. If Melville succeeded as an imaginative author his work was inferior, but if his work was accepted as a true-life report, then he was no author at all." @default.
