- W2499809966 abstract "One year into the new century Hofmannsthal wrote an essay in letter form entitled Brief des Lord Chandos; it was published in 1902 as Ein Brief. Using an alienating historical mask Hofmannsthal expressed the consternation experienced by the young lord and the impasse he had reached, the inability to think and speak coherently, the awareness of the inadequacy of language and the reluctance to attempt to use generalisations and value-judgements; those words which had hitherto come to him so easily, those words which were glibly used to pronounce and pontificate, he explained, crumbled in his mouth like rotting fungus. Words had lost all coherence for him, and the pattern of reality was totally fragmented: all became a vortex which swirled in vertiginious confusion. This Sprachkrise, endemic in Vienna at the turn of the century (we think of the closing proposition of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus), betokened a deep-seated malaise in man’s attitude to language: in Hofmannsthal’s case that effortless ease with which he had written poetry of exquisite refinement had been superseded by crisis, and although he did not abjure writing he nevertheless sensed that lyrical self-indulgence was not enough, and that the twentieth century would bring with it more challenging and more disturbing modes of experience. At the same time that Hofmannsthal published Ein Brief (it appeared in book form in 1905) another work was in progress which, appearing in 1906, again takes as one of its central themes the problem of communication — Robert Musil’s Die Verwirrungen des Zoglings Torleβ. This remarkable short novel has little in common with the rash of descriptions of pedagogical cruelty to be found in many of the popular novels of this time (including Hesse’s Unterm Rad), nor is it essentially a study in homosexuality." @default.
