• W2500105827 abstract "Colloids generally appear optically clear, hazy or translucent, or turbid depending upon the particle size and concentration, with larger sizes exhibiting greater opacity. Even apparently clear colloids show a definite “beam” when a collimated ray of light passes through them in a dark room— even when the colloids are very dilute. This is the so-called “Tyndall Effect,” and is diagnostic for all colloids. As the light ray enters the colloid, its oscillating electrical field induces dipoles in the molecules of the particles and causes them to oscillate. An oscillating dipole radiates electromagnetic waves in all directions except in the direction of its axis–that is, one cannot “see” that a dipole is oscillating when looking at it end on. The intensity of this secondary radiation, the scattering, is a strong function of the incoming frequency, with the result that if white light enters the colloid, blue wavelengths tend to be scattered and red ones tend to be transmitted. This scattering of light is also the reason why smoke, haze, and small particle size polymer colloids have a bluish cast. The general theory of light scattering that applies to all colloids of both light-absorbing and non-absorbing particles of any size and shape is referred to as the Lorenz-Mie theory." @default.
