- W2500298873 abstract "Abstract The soybean (Glycine max (Merr) L.) is among the most important legumes and is a suitable source of protein and oil. It is able to develop a symbiotic association with its specific rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium japonicum, and acquire most of its essential N for growth and yield production. However, under stress the growth and activity of the soybean and its symbiotic rhizobium decreases, because they are not tolerant under stress. Soil tillage is an important agronomical practice affecting soil and plant properties and hence it may be considered as an important method for the alleviation of stress on soybean growth and yield production. In this chapter the effects of soil tillage on the alleviation of different soil stresses such as soil compaction, drought, acidity, and suboptimal root zone temperature have been reviewed. The proper tillage method can alleviate the adverse effects of stress on plant growth and yield production by improving the properties of soil and hence increasing the productivity of soil. Among the most effective methods of soil tillage is no tillage (NT), in which the agricultural machinery is not used in the field, and the crop residue is kept on the soil surface. The use of NT can affect different soil properties including the physical, chemical, and biological ones by increasing soil moisture (decreased rate of water loss from the soil surface), adjusting the temperature of the soil, improving the structure of the soil, and increasing the rate of the soil organic matter. How soybean growth is affected under stress and how such stresses may be alleviated by soil tillage are presented and reviewed in this chapter." @default.
