- W2500336578 abstract "In the last chapter, we saw how meditation was primarily a system for training attention and awareness, this being the common denominator across the diverse practices featured in the narratives. This chapter picks up the baton by arguing that this development of attention and awareness helped to engender wellbeing in various ways. In Chapter 1, we saw that wellbeing could be conceptualised in multidimensional terms as comprising psychological, social and biological dimensions. Now we shall explore the impact meditation had on these three dimensions. From a psychological perspective, men could better deal with distress. Meditation also helped promote the positive dimensions of wellbeing, i.e., SWB, PWB and EWB. From a social perspective men became more skilled at building relationships. Moreover, by connecting with social groups around meditation, men developed their social capital. Finally from a biological perspective, men were better at engaging in health-promoting behaviours, like cutting down alcohol use. This was partly because of a sense of self-control engendered by their meditation practice, and partly because men were influenced by Buddhist discourses which encouraged such behaviours.KeywordsPositive EmotionEmotional IntelligenceNegative ThoughtMeditation PracticeEmotional AwarenessThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
