- W2500386871 abstract "The process of blood digestion in ticks differs greatly from that in hematophagous insects. In blood-sucking insects, protein digestion proceeds rapidly and takes place in the lumen of the intestine. The proteases in tsetse flies, mosquitoes, and many other insects are trypsin-like enzymes with a pH optimum in the alkaline range. In ticks, blood digestion is a slow intracellular process, the ultrastructural features of which are present in the midgut epithelial cells in several species of ixodid and argasid ticks. Digestion in ticks is intracellular. The pH optimum of the tick proteases is around 3.0, whereas the pH of the gut contents is 6.5. This chapter illustrates the data obtained by diverse methods from different tick species and life stages, in terms of digestive function. Ixodid ticks remain attached to their vertebrate host for long periods and feed continuously for days, even weeks. Most of the food taken is blood, but females and immature stages also ingest significant quantities of non-blood tissue fluids, especially during the initial periods of slow feeding." @default.
