- W2500401217 abstract "Publisher Summary The transcutaneous monitoring of oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressures (tcPCO 2 and tcPCO 2 ) is a potentially important new method for the investigation of fetal physiology during labor as well as a tool for fetal surveillance. This chapter presents the findings of a clinical study in which tcPCO 2 was recorded in 224 fetuses during labor when suspect, prepathological or pathological heart rate patterns occurred. In 13 fetuses, the pH of blood samples from the umbilical artery was less than 7.19. All infants were born in a vigorous condition with Apgar scores of more than 7. When not corrected for the production of CO 2 in the skin (tissue factor) and for the effect of raised temperature (temperature factor), the transcutaneous values clearly exceeded the values of the fetal blood. As pH measurements are one basis of fetal surveillance during labor, the correlation between tcPCO 2 and pH was investigated. An inverse and statistically significant correlation between tcPCO 2 and pH levels was found. The use of transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring is a helpful tool in the surveillance of the fetus during labor when the course of an acute complication is not clearly indicated by the fetal heart-rate pattern." @default.
