- W2500402270 abstract "In this Chapter we shall address ourselves, at rather less length, to a myth that is the obverse of proletarianisation, the myth of declining opportunities or truncated careers. It has been extensively believed that opportunities to rise from the ranks into managerial positions have seriously declined in recent years. As Little and Westergaard (1964, p. 302) put it, ‘As professionalisation, bureaucratisation and automation of work proceed, so access to occupations of the middle and higher levels increasingly demands formal educational qualifications. Career prospects and social position come to depend less on experience and training acquired on the job than on the education obtained in childhood and adolescence.’ Goldthorpe (1964, p. 108) similarly has argued, ‘To the extent that education becomes a key determinant of occupational achievement, the chances of “getting ahead” for those who start in a lowly position are inevitably diminished. This fact is most clearly demonstrated in recent studies of the recruitment of industrial managers. These show that as the educational standards of managers have risen, the likelihood of shop floor workers being promoted above supervisory level has been reduced.’" @default.
