- W2500522963 abstract "Globally, natural disasters have a profound impact on the lives of those caught in their wake. Natural disasters have resulted in thousands of deaths, millions of lives adversely affected, as well as billions of dollars in loss and damages. While natural disasters are not discriminatory to age group, the focus of this chapter will be on the affected youth. Youth who are affected by disaster can suffer from a number of conditions, both psychological and physical, both short and long term. This chapter will present a review of the existing research related to the impact of disaster on youth, and on determinants that can serve as risk or protective factors. Specifically, the review is structured around Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Framework, which postulates that natural disasters can disrupt ecological systems, namely the microsystems of family influences (e.g. family loss, parental stress, and parental functioning), which in turn negatively exacerbates the impact on children. While research in this area is burgeoning, the work conducted to date directly gives future directions for clinical assessment and treatment following disaster, disaster preparedness, and disaster research, as well as a call to action for policy makers." @default.
