- W2500598195 abstract "This chapter presents a little-known vernacular Greek lament for the capture of Athens by the Ottoman Turks in 1456. Its anonymous author identifies the invading enemies as barbarian ‘Persians’ and invokes the protection of the Virgin Mary, to whom he looks for vengeance, while blaming the Athenians’ sinful lifestyle for provoking the disaster. The lament reinforces the identification of the Turks, the Arabs, and the Muslims in general with the ancient Persians, and draws on notions of the besieged and captured city in classical to late antique ekphraseis to describe the destruction more vividly. The author deploys a range of binary oppositions between the Greeks and the peoples of the East and thus ‘documents’ the early modern emergence of the antagonism, which Edward Said identified as the discourse of modern Orientalism but which he saw as flourishing only from the late eighteenth century onward." @default.
