- W2500975062 abstract "W. H. Auden called Dryden ‘… the greatest Occasional poet in English.’1 Dryden is the premier occasional poet of this language not necessarily because that is where his talents lay, but because he was the best poet writing at a time when invention was becoming more and more constricted, and poets were forced to try to hide behind the claim of occasionality. This chapter focuses on the beginning and the ending of the life of Dryden (to the exclusion of the distinguished, successful, mid-career period) to illustrate the way that mid-seventeenth-century English poets lived and died by the poetic occasion. As noted in the analyses of the contributors to Justa Edovardo King II, it is in the beginning of poems (and, by extension, the beginnings of poetic careers) that the poet’s claim to the right to write is established. As Richard Helgerson puts it in describing his focus on the career-trajectories of his Self-Crowned Laureates, I give more attention to how the poet gets to his laureate destination than to what he does when he gets there… For in those crossings of the threshold, when the author first appears before his audience, the pressure on self-presentation is greatest. To some extent, each beginning — beginnings of individual works as well as beginnings of careers — brings a renewal of self-presentational pressure. (Helgerson, 13)" @default.
