- W2501549504 abstract "A spatial and temporal analysis is presented of heavy snowfalls across Great Britain over a 138-year period (1861–1999). The analysis is based on what is termed a ‘heavy snowfall day’ (HSD) (when a snowfall of at least 13 cm occurred somewhere in Great Britain). A total of 1137 HSDs have been identified with 609 heavy snow events (HSEs). Factors that govern HSDs including mid-latitude depressions, frontal activity (including the number and type of fronts) and lamb weather types (LWTs) are discussed. The alignment and frequency of the main depression tracks associated with heavy snowfall point to the influence of warm seas and upland areas. The main depression tracks are from the Bay of Biscay along the English Channel and west-east across northern districts of Great Britain (Wild, 2005a). Snow falling on HSDs and the depth and frequency of snow lying on the ground, all show spatial patterns. A geographical analysis of snow depth by LWT shows the importance of Anticyclonic, Easterly, Southerly and Cyclonic patterns. The Anticyclonic, Easterly and Westerly Types are also frequent up to 5 days before and 5 days after a HSD. Geographical variations in snow cover emphasise the contrast between cold ‘snowy’ central, eastern, northern and elevated regions and warmer coastal, southern and south-western regions of Great Britain (Wild, 2005a). This chapter details a slight rise in the number of heavy snowfall events (HSEs) and HSDs (particularly in Scotland) in recent decades, a reduction in the average duration of individual HSEs and a significant decline in the duration of snow cover. Ten of the largest heavy snowfall events between 1861 and 1999 are presented, along with selected case studies." @default.
