- W2502034802 abstract "Abstract: This article focuses on a number of medieval treatments of the literary figure of Cato in Lucan’s Pharsalia (or Bellum civile, c. 60-c. 65 AD), who was based on the Roman politician and military general Cato of Utica, Marcus Porcius Cato Uticencis. The study begins with a detailed presentation of Cato as he is described in books II and IX of the Pharsalia, where he is the ideal incarnation of stoic virtue: just, wise, moderate, and brave. Thereafter, attention is directed towards two examples of the medieval representation of these Catonic virtues. First, the Latin glosses to the Pharsalia by Arnoul of Orleans (twelfth century) portray Cato as an example of virtue par excellence, if one considers the epic as a unconscious vehicle of the Christian message. Then, the Fet des Romains (1213-14), one of the first vernacular histories of Rome, transforms the characteristics of the Catonic, Roman and stoic virtus into that of the preudome, for pedagogical reasons. Thus, the medieval imagination, receptive to the figure of the virtuous Cato, succeeds in elaborating concepts which are markedly different from the classical model, and which align themselves closely to the new religion and to the ideals of chivalry. @default.
