- W2502100604 abstract "Through their analysis of various foundational discourses concerning sexuality in modernity, Egan and Hawkes argue that discourses on child sexuality have rarely been about children themselves. Rather, ‘childhood sexuality and the desire to bring it under control provided an avenue for addressing other cultural anxieties (e.g., racial purity, affirming the institution of marriage, and constructing more rigid gender boundaries)’ (2010: 155). Indeed, the taboo nature of children’s sexuality and their presumed innocence amplifies many of the general anxieties surrounding sexuality, particularly the vexed concerns about the maintenance of racial and gendered differences and of childhood itself. Various institutions codify rules, prescriptions and assumptions about child sexuality and its stakes. Thus part of being a child today means being entangled in a thicket of discourses and regulations from multiple sources on multiple scales. While recent scholarly literature has begun to explore how primary school children navigate discourses of gender, class, age, heteronormativity and the sanctity of marriage and how they are productive of children’s sexualities, very little research has explored how race intersects with sexuality in children’s everyday lives (for notable exceptions see Connolly, 2002; Ali, 2003; Bhana, 2005). The innocent child construct that inhibits our understanding of children’s sexualities also plagues our understanding of children’s racial subjectivities." @default.
