• W2502604138 abstract "This paper analyzes the role of formal and informal institutions to understanding the functioning of economic growth process. We focus on the four largest emerging markets: Brazil, Russia India and China – commonly referred to as the BRIC countries. It is initially discussed the formal institutions associated with the so-called good governance, based in the World Bank developments. Six measures of institutions of governance were employed in the analysis, amongst other variables for the period 1996-2009. The empirical results available in the literature indicate that governance and institutions are crucial for economic growth. On the other hand, all the BRIC countries differ from most of the countries studied in the law, institutions, finance, and growth literature. Considering this point, in the second part, the article analyzes, based on the Helmke and Levitsky framework of informal institutions, two related aspects, both important for the economic growth process: firm ownership structures and property rights; and the relationship between firms and external investors. The main conclusion is that, although all the BRIC countries differ from most of the countries studied in terms of formal institutions, they make extensive use of informal and relationship-based arrangements to finance growth, with different results: The Best one in China and some states of India and the worst in Russia and others states of India.
