- W2502863706 abstract "Theconventional wisdom is that no-one benefits from wars, and especially not minorities. The Jewish Holocaust is always cited as unanswerable proof for the most sceptical, should evidence be needed, that it is the ordinary, the weak and above all the innocent who suffer most in war. In reality, the historical record of the impact of war upon national minorities has been extraordinarily mixed, sometimes proving unexpectedly advantageous, occasionally inflicting damage literally unthinkable in peacetime. The Jewish experience of attempted genocide should not automatically be assumed as typical of the wartime treatment of minorities, even by the Nazis in the Second World War. A more objective coverage of the many national minorities in eastern Europe over the century after 1848 shows war as complex, ambivalent and downright contradictory a phenomenon of human society as peace, with a similar paradoxical crop of national survivors and fatalities, winners and losers." @default.
