- W2503325680 abstract "Free gases compress within structured, chilled water by phase change into solid-solution hydrates where, if the hydrates become confined within impermeable sediments, subsequent decomposition creates extremely high pressures. Thus, gas hydrates accumulated in ocean sediments under these prescribed conditions cause seafloor instabilities if natural or man-made stimulations force hydrate decomposition. This chapter first discusses potential seafloor hazards from gas hydrates during drilling, completion, and production operations. Then, intriguing indications of ancient submarine landslides from hydrate decompositions are reviewed. Contemporary seafloor craters and submarine mud volcanoes as manifestations of seafloor instabilities in gas hydrate zones are discussed. Bubbles of hydrocarbon gases erupting from deepwater seafloors, whether triggered by tectonic events or catastrophic well blowouts, become coated with hydrates in drifting plumes. The text considers delayed dissipation of these hydrate/gas plumes. The awesome, potential power of gas hydrate decomposition is illustrated with a case study of the Lake Nyos disaster." @default.
