- W2503521608 abstract "This chapter discusses the microbiology of the sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). It reviews the utilization of the SRB for removing the heavy metals and for reducing the metal oxyanions. SRB can minimize metal mobility and toxicity because of insoluble metal sulphide precipitates. The two most prevalent genera of SRB are: Desulfotomaculum —comprised of spore-forming, straight or curved rods, and the non-sporing genus Desulfovibrio —with curved motile vibrios or rods. The preferred carbon sources for SRB are low molecular-weight compounds such as organic acids (lactate, pyruvate, formate and malate), fatty acids like acetate, and alcohols. There are various factors that affect the SRB growth. These include dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH. The use of SRB for metal removal can be applied to different industrial wastes, including contaminated groundwater, landfill leachate, plating wastes, leachate from contaminated soils and mining effluent in a variety of processes including the anaerobic filters, the sludge blanket reactors, and the contact systems. Many strains of SRB are capable of reducing the soluble oxidized oxyanions like MoO 4 2- to insoluble phases like MoS 2 or MoO 2 ." @default.
