• W2503679905 abstract "Hollow fiber membrane contactors have been extensively used as gas-liquid contactor devices to provide a high surface area within a small volume, and have been demonstrated in a wide range of application such as in gas stripping and gas absorption. There are many applications in the industries for this process such as the production of ultra pure water in semiconductors, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and power industries and the removal of oxygen in recharge water during oil extraction. The aims of this study are to evaluate the effectiveness of hollow fiber membrane contactors in removing dissolved oxygen from water via combination vacuum and sweep gas processes; and to develop a simple model to characterize the mass transfer correlation in the contactors. Water is flowed in the shell side of the contactors, whilst, nitrogen gas, used as sweep gas, is flowed to the lumen fibers and is exerted by vacuum during the experiments. The experimental results show that oxygen transfer coefficients increase with liquid flow rate and decrease with membrane packing fraction in the contactors. Hydrodynamics analysis of the contactors showed that, at the same Reynolds number, friction factors increase with decreasing membrane packing density of the contactors. The Reynolds number dependency on friction factor is in accordance with the Reynolds number dependency on mass transfer coefficients, which indicated that the mass transfer in the membrane contactor is predominantly in the turbulent region. The friction factor ratio data reveals that the fibers surface did not behave like a smooth pipe within the range of velocity in the experiments." @default.
