- W2503721302 abstract "Before the publication of A Tale of a Tub in 1704, Swift had appeared in his own person in the world of letters only as an editor of the Letters of Sir William Temple… The first two volumes were printed in 1700 with a dedication in which he humbly presents them to his Most Sacred Majesty William III, describing himself as a domestic chaplain to his Excellency the Earl of Berkeley, one of the Lords Justices of Ireland. A third volume was printed in 1703. But he evidently felt that in his role as a satirist he would be hampered and restricted if he were to appear in this way, wearing a parson’s gown and associated with such respectable connections. There had been, indeed, in the seventeenth century, a splendid tradition among the most reverend and eminent divines in their controversial treatises about serious matters which would seem to sanction, as Anthony Collins pointed out in his Discourse concerning Ridicule, the use of ‘Insult, Buffoonery, Banter, Ridicule, Irony, Mockery and bitter Railing’; and after the Restoration this tendency was further encouraged by a Court audience led by ‘a King who had a disposition to banter and ridicule everybody’ and ‘some of the greatest Droles and Wits that any Age ever produc’d’. But tastes were changing at the end of the century, and Swift himself was then under the influence of Sir William Temple, who had solemnly and vigorously denounced the taste for satire, and had probably prevented Swift from publishing The Battle of the Books in 1698." @default.
