- W2503980997 abstract "Direct vitrification of low-level radioactive waste is being pursued by a number of commercial firms. Because of the high organic content of many of these waste streams, e.g. ion exchange resins and dry activated waste, the Clemson Technical Center is exploring an alternative approach using an oxidation pretreatment step to destroy the organic content prior to vitrification. This approach has significant advantages which include the following: (1) A homogenous waste stream is produced that meets narrow glass composition requirements. (2) Oxidation prior to vitrification avoids the implication that the melter is used as an incinerator. (3) Greater process control within the melter is achieved. Rust is cooperating with the US Department of Energy`s Savannah River Technology Center and Clemson University to advance vitrification technology. The development of a robust wet oxidation process will advance the application of vitrification as a treatment alternative for radioactive waste by decreasing the adverse effects of organics in low-level waste on vitrification process equipment and waste glass durability. Presently, the Clemson Technical Center is investigating low temperature/low pressure wet oxidation technologies using hydrogen peroxide, air/nitric acid, nitric/sulfuric acid, or electrochemical oxidation systems to pretreat waste streams prior to vitrification." @default.
