- W250398214 abstract "ABSTRACT Science courses required by education majors at Eastern Michigan University are taught by science department faculty and either consist completely of elementary education science majors or are dominated by secondary education science majors. The design of the weather course for secondary education earth science majors and the weather and climate course for elementary education science majors demonstrate one way these courses with similar content are handled. Courses are designed to take advantage of the inquiry-based or active-learning techniques to teach course content while serving as a model for teaching methods. Therefore, major parts of the content are taught within the context of pedagogy that serves well both education majors and science majors. In courses that include only education majors the pedagogy is further discussed and the students are given an opportunity to practice satisfying state content expectations by presenting lesson plans they develop. INTRODUCTION The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) education program relies on science departments to teach courses that include both teaching methods and scientific content in courses composed entirely of elementary education science majors. Separately, the secondary education science majors take courses with non-education students majoring in the sciences and so teaching methods are not required to be taught. However, because of the size of the education program at EMU the secondary education science majors often dominate in the number of students in the courses that they are required to complete. In either case the instructor is forced to design courses where future teachers are explicitly considered in the design of the course. Content in the earth sciences must be aligned with state standards for elementary education science majors (Michigan Department of Education, 2007a), and for secondary education earth science majors (Michigan Department of Education, 2007b). Courses required for secondary education earth science majors must provide content that meets these standards without alienating the non-education science majors. The reliance on science departments to teach elementary education science courses that include both methods and science content can make the objectives of the course daunting for the instructor and the student. Often times the instructor, because of a lack of knowledge in the science content or in the methods of teaching to elementary and middle school students, is forced to place a heavy emphasis on either content or methods. Upon graduation and landing a teaching job, the elementary education science majors taught only methods enters the classroom feeling ill-prepared to answer fundamental questions that elementary and middle school students often ask and rarely can keep current with the science. The elementary education science majors taught only content feel bewildered as to how to teach the often technical aspect of the science they just learned in an elementary and middle school setting. This paper describes the course designs of the instructor of both the weather course for non-education earth science and secondary education earth science majors and the weather and climate course for elementary education science majors. The instructor's teaching methods appear to serve the education majors well based on student assessment feedback and science educators who have observed the instructor teach. The instructor performed informal assessments of the courses after the first 5 weeks of each course. All 13 students in a section of the weather course stated that the activities are useful and interesting and nearly half of the 57 students in three sections of the weather and climate course for elementary education science majors mention the demonstrations and activities for the open-ended question, What does the instructor do that you find so effective? Students mention that the activities often target different learning styles and provide practical examples of the content. …" @default.
