- W2504231697 abstract "Conservation behavior provides tools for understanding and possibly manipulating animal behavior to further conservation goals. Keeping animals in captivity can help to preserve endangered species, conserve genetic resources, or obtain populations of animals for reintroduction. This requires research on mating systems, territoriality, and foraging behavior. The introduction of captive animals into natural habitats must be informed by knowledge of dispersal behavior and of how animals obtain critical information for survival. Neophobia, the fear of new situations, protects animals from risky situations and can be manipulated to keep human and animal populations apart. Lack of neophobia is a key element of success in invasive animals and contributes to negative human–wildlife interactions. Activities such as hunting, feeding birds, and leaving pet food outdoors have behavioral effects that often result in public pressure to relocate or kill wildlife. Human activities in conservation areas also affect wildlife behavior and it is necessary for future design of reserves to take these effects into account." @default.
