- W2504423706 abstract "Although in recent years historians and literary critics have often cited or commented on Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African. Written by Himself (London, 1789), they have said very little about how Equiano employs intertextual allusions in his argument against the slave trade. Few have discussed Equiano as a literary artist at the verbal level. A close look at Equiano’s use of quotations and allusions, particularly in Chapter 5 of his autobiography, demonstrates that he relies on his readers’ familiarity with the relevant intertextual contexts in effect to coauthor or complete his arguments. He invokes other voices to render his personal experiences and observations universal. Furthermore, what Equiano does not say when he quotes from or alludes to external texts may be as significant as what he says explicitly, because such ellipses prompt his informed readers tofill in the gaps he leaves to recognise for themselves the full implications of his argument. No less than Alexander Pope in The Rape of the Lock, Equiano in his Interesting Narrative requires his readers to consider the limits of ‘the rich interplay between the author’s text and the full contexts it allusively arouses’ to appreciate the role his allusions play ‘in constituting the fabric of his’ autobiography.KeywordsHuman SpeciesAfrican DescentSlave TradeSlave OwnerParadise LostThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
