- W2504658823 abstract "Peptides and glycopeptides hold a special place in the biosphere, and have been selected to play a role in many important biological functions from the cellular to the organism level. It has been discovered that peptides act as hormones, neurotransmitters, and antibiotics. Much work has been done to understand the bioactive conformation of peptide hormones, such as angiotensin II, bradykinin, and oxytocin, as the conformation of a peptide can affect its biological activity. Some peptides also exhibit broad-spectrum antibiotic activity, and their unique mode of action allows them to kill some of the more serious antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Glycosylation, in its many forms, has been found to have many influences on peptide conformation and biological function. Advances in the synthesis of peptides and glycopeptides have not only allowed for the study of the function of specific peptides and glycopeptides, but have also provided access to valuable models for understanding the function of larger proteins and glycoproteins, such as plant and animal structural glycoproteins and antifreeze glycoproteins. Moreover, synthetic peptides and glycopeptides are now being developed in therapeutic applications, such as for the creation of vaccines against malaria and cancer." @default.
