- W2504817875 abstract "The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that 1–4% of the world population may have some level of cognitive disability, but this is difficult to confirm due to extreme variations in definition, culture, measurement sources, and methodology. An individual with cognitive disabilities may experience the presence of incomplete or arrested mental development, principally characterized by the deterioration of concrete functions at each stage of development, and that contributes to the overall level of intelligence. Over the past decade, pervasive computing solutions for health care have become increasingly prevalent in both research and commercial efforts, supporting the independence, therapy life cycle, and motor interventions of individuals with cognitive disabilities. In this chapter, we analyze a variety of research projects and commercial solutions devoted to the understanding, designing, developing, and pilot testing of pervasive healthcare applications to support the capturing of behaviors relevant for clinical assessment and help individuals with cognitive disabilities cope with challenges related to cognition, motor development, and navigation. To exemplify how pervasive computing could help overcome some of these challenges, we present three case studies of the use of pervasive technology to support the needs of elders with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and children with autism. We close reflecting on our experiences and of other research projects in this domain, summarizing the research in this space and outlining research challenges, current approaches, results, and trends. Finally, we discuss future research directions as a springboard for new focus in pervasive health care to support individuals with cognitive disabilities." @default.
