- W2505260079 abstract "While over the last 20 years most of the social sciences, including International Relations, have come under the influence of constructivism, this (meta-)theoretical perspective seems to have passed Terrorism Research by. Terrorism Research does not seem bothered by the ‘latest’ developments in IR, nor does IR theory seem interested in the subject of terrorism.1 This is a shame as both disciplines have something to offer to the other. While IR would gain insight into a subject which has recently dominated much of international politics, Terrorism Research would greatly gain from the theoretical understandings and insights of a discipline which has continuously struggled to explain political violence. Nevertheless, terrorism researchers seem comfortable in their small enclave devoid of political theory. They are concerned with questions such as: What is terrorism? What causes it? How is it organised and financed? What are its motives? They are predominantly interested in the terrorist actor, which may appear natural. Indeed, what should they investigate if not the terrorist (organisation)? And what better way to do it than having direct contact with the terrorist and reporting these primary observations? As we have seen firsthand information and primary sources are still thought to be the best way of doing research and accessing the truth about ‘new terrorism’ and groups such as al-Qaeda." @default.
