- W2505760228 abstract "Galanin, a 28 amino acid peptide originally isolated from porcine intestine (Tatemoto et al., 1983) is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems of numerous species (Ch’ng et al., 1985 ; Kummer, 1987). Galanin exerts scores of biological effects, inhibition of insulin release being currently considered as the best recognized action of the neuropeptide (Ahren et al., 1988). Therefore, the first galanin specific receptors were discovered in the pancreatic beta cell, a supposedly actual target cell for galanin. Indeed, using 125I-galanin as tracer, we were able to identify specific receptors of high affinity and specificity for galanin in a transplantable hamster pancreatic beta cell tumor (Amiranoff et al., 1987). These pioneering studies were extended to a pancreatic model compatible with the assessment of the biological significance of galanin receptors in pancreas i.e. a rat insulin-secreting cell clone, the Rin m 5F cell line (Gazdar et al., 1980). This model was found to express specific galanin receptors functionally coupled to an inhibition of insulin release (Amiranoff et al., 1988). The present paper is designed to review the identification and molecular properties of the pancreatic galanin receptor, its coupling to a biological effect and the possible involvement of distinct pertussis toxin-sensitive pathways in the coupling process." @default.
