- W2506212561 abstract "There is arguably no more Western historical event than the sixteenth-century reform movement within European Christendom that later became known as the Reformation. Traditionally defined as ‘the rise of an evangelical Christianity that could not accommodate itself to the old theology and ecclesiastical institutions’ 1 and limited to the years 1500–1650, the Reformation is considered by mainstream historiography as a development that was instrumental in the advent of Western modernity. The Protestant Reformation is believed to have contributed to the emergence of the nation state in Europe through the process of confessionalization, to have freed European political and social institutions from an ecclesiastic grip, to have introduced the principles of religious tolerance and liberty of conscience resulting in a new emphasis on individualism, and, ultimately, to have created a new work ethic, which enabled the rise of modern capitalism.2 To Western historians, the Protestant Reformation is, therefore, much more than a theological reform of medieval Christianity. The forces unleashed by the confessional battles are assumed to have contributed to shaping the identity of continental Europe as a political and cultural entity,3 endowing Western civilization with a new value system that accounted for the rise of the West and its eventual supremacy over other civilizations." @default.
