- W2506233057 abstract "The comfort zone in which a researcher in the natural sciences usually operates does not necessarily include societal aspects, direct communication with members of the public, or involvement with the media. Unless a research team wants to grab the media’s attention, outreach activities and interaction with the public are often considered a “necessary evil” to fulfill obligations, which are nowadays written routinely into research contracts. A different approach is essential when dealing with research surrounding natural hazards, risk, and its mitigation. Not only is the ultimate aim of such research the mitigation of individual and societal risk, saving lives, and reducing impact on infrastructure and assets; the participation of the public is, in most cases, an essential contribution to its success. Effective communication is the condicio sine qua non . In this article, I shall reflect on several aspects of communication, the clash between the academic and the real world, as well as the conflict of interest between individual scientists and research groups. I base these thoughts about ethical behavior on more than 20 years of experience in volcanological research at different universities worldwide, in several volcano observatories, and from being a member of a scientific advisory committee for volcanic risk assessment for the British Government in Montserrat, West Indies. The examples used here are taken from the field of volcano monitoring and forecasting, and are loosely subdivided into three categories: the problem of forecasting and predictability, the minefield of communication with the public, and tension and stress in the academic world." @default.
