- W2506419610 abstract "On the evening of 8 June 1867, two hundred working men assembled on the platform of London Bridge Station, laughing and joking with “innocent banter” as they waited to climb aboard a Cook’s excursion train. The high-spirited travelers comprised the first batch of 3000 workers who would attend the Paris Exhibition between June and October under the aegis of the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union (WMCIU) and its special Working Men’s Excursion Committee.1 Presided over by the radical MP, Austen Henry Layard, and manned by other liberal reformers and “earnest” working men, the WMCIU had worked tirelessly since December of 1866, to organize the tours. Preparations included winning subsidies from the Education Department and garnering charitable donations from subscribers; coordinating railway timetables, discount railway fares and advertising; and conducting pre-excursion trips to Paris to attain official permission from the French government and to arrange for the workmen’s food, lodging and tourist itineraries. Now, at last, the tours were under way." @default.
