- W2506474952 abstract "Hearts with functionally one ventricle are uncommon but require a disproportionate amount of healthcare resources because of the complexity of management and the need for repeated interventions and lifelong care. Optimal management depends on early recognition and careful observation and planning. This chapter will discuss hearts with anatomically one dominant ventricle [double-inlet left ventricle (DILV), double-inlet right ventricle (DIRV), tricuspid atresia (TA)] and some complex hearts with anatomically two well-developed ventricles usually treated as functionally one [superior-inferior ventricles (SIV) and crisscross connections]. Current speculation about embryologic development will be described. The anatomy, including frequently encountered variants, will be illustrated using heart specimens. The resulting physiology, often considered the first derivative of anatomy, will be discussed. Management strategies will be outlined as the basis for designing comprehensive clinical imaging protocols. The correlation between clinical imaging studies and anatomic specimens will be emphasized." @default.
