- W2506479428 abstract "ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band SAR) data acquired between December 2006 and January 2011 were used to investigate changes in the areal extent of three river-mouth bars in distributaries of the Mekong River delta. In the SAR data, river-mouth bars are characterized by strong backscatter, whereas the adjoining river water is characterized by weak backscatter. The areal extents of the river-mouth bars, extracted from the SAR data by using a histogram thresholding algorithm, increased gradually on an annual time scale. Tidal heights at the time of SAR data acquisition clearly correlated with the areal extent of the river-mouth bars. Seasonal variations in the areal extent of river-mouth bars were also recognized; these were controlled mainly by monsoon-influenced water-level variations. This study demonstrates that SAR data can be used to quantify long-term changes in the area and shape of river-mouth bars." @default.
